Chapter Twelve

GAVINO

My windshield wipers thump back and forth as I pull into the Esposito residence. I’d texted Beverly that I was stopping by nearly thirty minutes ago but checking my phone now, I see that I still haven’t gotten a response. Parking outside of the garage, I flick through my messages once more, pulling up her name to send her a quick “I’m here” text.

It’s a bit later than I originally planned to get here, but considering she’s usually a night owl, I doubt it matters. I’ve been out of town for a few weeks now and I honestly don’t know if I could wait to see her anyway. Looking at the rain out my window, I sigh, reaching into the back seat to grab my jacket. Shuffling it on, I open the door and step out into the pelting rain, one of my shoes dropping into a puddle as I shut my door.

Thunder rolls in the distance and I change my trajectory from the house to around the back toward the conservatory. If I know anything about Beverly, it’s that she loves a good thunderstorm, and that’s her favorite place to go during one. Picking my pace up to a jog, I almost don’t hear the other set of footsteps coming around the corner, the wind on my ears almost blocking out the sound of them on the phone.

Fuck.

Instead of rounding the corner, I step off to the side, pressing my back against the house, partially hidden by the trash cans. Remy walks past me a second later, his phone to his ear as he jogs off of the path, heading toward the tree line. I frown, watching the space he disappeared through, the rain dripping from my hood to hit my cheeks.

Why the hell did he hide his car?

I don’t know how long I stand there, waiting to make sure the coast is clear, but another roll of thunder sounds in the sky, forcing me into action. My heart thumps with confusion as I come up to the conservatory. I can see that Beverly is inside, sitting in the almost completely dark room, hands braiding her long hair over her shoulder. I knock on the glass door and she startles, her eyes softening once she sees it’s me.

Coming inside, I remove my hood, shaking off my wet coat. “Sorry I’m later than we planned.” She smiles at me, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “I messaged.”

Letting her hair go, she tosses the braid over her shoulder, her arms crossing over her stomach. “Did you? I haven’t looked at my phone in a while, I think I left it in the house.”

Moving closer, I eye her. Something doesn’t feel right. One of the things I love most about Beverly is that she’s always been easy to talk to, easy to be around. Something is off about her tonight. I pause at the armchair next to hers. “You don’t mind, do you? We can get together tomorrow instead?”

Her head shakes, dark curls that have already fallen loose from the braid brushing along her cheeks with the action.
